ASET Designations

Certification with ASET means working towards and meeting a high standard of academic excellence, ongoing technical experience and ethical, reliable professionalism and accountability. ASET's credentials are well-known in industry and are highly respected marks of quality. 

Technologist in Training (T.T.)
T.T. members have graduated from a technical program but have not yet gained the minimum two years' related work experience requirement for certification.

Certified Technician (C.Tech.)
A C.Tech. is an applied science, information, or engineering technology professional who performs routine technical procedures with occasional direct supervision and who may assume limited responsibility for any decision making process.

Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.)
A C.E.T. is an applied science, information, or engineering technology professional who is capable of assuming responsibility and exercising independent judgment to perform technical tasks and solve problems in complex technological areas with limited direct supervision.

Registered Engineering Technologist (R.E.T.)
A professional who, through academic training and experience in the application of engineering or scientific principles, is capable of assuming responsibility and exercising independent judgment in the practice of engineering technology or applied science technology. 

Professional Engineering Technologist (P.Tech.)
A P.Tech. is ASET’s professional designation geared towards members who have reached a senior level within their field, giving them the right to practice engineering and geoscience independently within existing codes and regulations. With this right, ASET members are able to sign off and stamp their own work within their designated scope of practice.

Typically, Professional Technologists are senior members within larger organizations, or members who are working as consultants or running their own business. Members with a P. Tech. designation:

  • Increase operational efficiency of businesses in the professional, scientific & technical services industry
  • Enable qualified technologists to work to their full potential
  • Provide an innovative option when staffing engineering teams
  • Ease the workforce shortage in engineering occupations
  • Bolster the attractiveness of the technology professions

Permit to Practice

An ASET Permit to Practice is issued to those partnerships, corporations, and other legal entities employing professional technologists: P.Tech.(Eng.) or P.Tech.(Geo.). The permit is issued in the organization’s name within the scope of practice of those professional technologists who are responsible for the practice of the ASET permit holder.

Partnerships, corporations, and other legal entities must apply for a permit to practice engineering or geoscience in Alberta through either the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) or the Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET).
