Election to ASET Council

ASET Elections

At each Annual General Meeting, a President, First Vice President, Second Vice President, and at least three Councillors are elected to the ASET Council.

Purpose of the ASET Council

The Council is accountable to the public and to ASET members. It is from its members that the Council obtains its authority.

The purpose of the Council is to act as the governing body of ASET and represent the Association’s members in determining and demanding appropriate organizational performance.

How to Run for the ASET Council

The immediate Past President coordinates the preparation of a list of ASET members willing to stand for election to Council. Certified technicians or technologists, including life members, honourary life members, and retired members are eligible for nomination.

In identifying nominees, the Past President seeks recommendations from ASET Council members, ASET staff, Chapter executives, and other ASET members. The Past President may also take into consideration the geographical location and the designation granted to potential nominees.

Additional nominations for a position on Council may be made in writing by any twenty-five Regular or Retired members in good standing, provided that the nominee is also in good standing.

Nominees are asked to provide written consent for the nomination, along with a photo and short biography for publication.

Notes:
·         Nominees for the position of President must have served on Council for a minimum period of two years immediately preceding their nomination, including one year as a Vice President.
·         Nominees for the position of Vice President must be serving on Council at the time of nomination and must have served on Council for a minimum of one year.

The Election Process

At least 120 days prior to the Annual General Meeting, members are notified of the upcoming election and the process for submitting nominations.

The nominee list prepared by the Past President is provided to the Chief Executive Officer at least 80 days prior to the Annual General Meeting and must include:

1.       At least one nominee for President;
2.       At least one nominee for First Vice President;
3.       At least one nominee for Second Vice President; and
4.       At least two more nominees for Councillors than there are vacancies to be filled on Council.

At least sixty-five days prior to the Annual General Meeting, the Chief Executive Officer will notify each Regular or Retired member of the nominations made by the Past President.

The list of nominees is then presented to Council and published on the ASET web site and in Technology Alberta.

Electronic voting is open to members at least 30 days prior to the Annual General Meeting. The election results are announced at the Annual General Meeting.

Please see Section 4 of the ASET Bylaws for more information on the nomination, election, and voting process.
