Mentorship Benefits

Your mentor will be someone who has a combination of business knowledge and experience, and will provide guidance as you navigate your development within the profession.  Some of the benefits of mentorship include:

  • Gaining confidence and growing personally
  • Improving your communication skills
  • Broadening your understanding of the profession
  • Setting realistic career goals and establishing a plan of action to achieve them
  • Gaining insight into organizational culture
  • Developing your professional network
  • Demonstrating your strengths and exploring your potential
  • Fulfilling one of your annual CPD requirements (ASET members only)

Roles and Responsibilities

To ensure that the mentoring relationship is a positive and productive learning experience, you should: 

  • Set aside time, be on time and be prepared for meeting(s) with your mentor
  • Identify professional and personal developmental needs and goals
  • Formulate an action plan to achieve your goals
  • Seek guidance and advice on effective approaches for your action plan
  • Accept responsibility for personal decisions and actions and maintain confidentiality
  • Carry out set tasks and projects in a timely and dedicated manner
  • Maintain regular and constructive contact with your mentor (if in a long-term partnership)
  • Contact ASET should you have any questions or concerns

Mentors and mentees in a mentoring partnership are also required to complete the Mentoring Partnership Agreement. This agreement assists with goal-setting, establishing a meeting schedule and expectations, and developing an action plan for the mentee.
