Goal Setting

The ASET application form includes a section to indicate your goals for participating in the mentoring program. ASET suggests using SMART Goals.1 The characteristics of SMART goals are described as: 

Specific

 

Goals should be clear and not too complex

Measurable

 

Progress and completion of goal should be tracked (achieve what/how many/by when)

Attainable

 

Goals need to be achievable and realistic (how can the goal be accomplished)

Relevant

 

Goals should represent an objective you are willing and able to work towards

Time-bound

 

Goals should be grounded in time fames by giving them a target date for completion

Examples

  • I want to enhance my coaching and counselling skills.
  • I want to learn more about mentoring to assist with developing a mentoring program in my own company.
  • I want to help a mentee to grow and develop in the profession.

Action Plan

Mentors and mentees in a mentoring partnership are also required to complete the Mentoring Partnership Agreement. This agreement assists with goal-setting, establishing a meeting schedule and expectations, and developing an action plan for the mentee.

Meeting Goals and Agenda – ASET Mentoring Partnership

The following outlines a sample of 16 meetings with your mentee. Your mentoring partnership may vary depending on the needs of the mentee.

·         Share strategies for career networking such as professional development courses, Chapter meetings, ASET committees, community volunteer groups, etc.

Job Interviews

·         Answer any questions about job interviews

·         Discuss preparing for a job interview

·         Conduct a mock interview session and provide feedback

·         Follow up on career networking – discuss mentee action plan for networking (target 3 informational meetings)

Workplace Culture and Etiquette

·         Discuss unwritten rules for emails, voice messages, telephone interviews, workplace attire

·         Discuss workplace culture regarding – networking at workplace, attendance and participation at meetings, attendance and participation in work social events and community events in relation to your work experience

·         Discuss conflict resolution strategies and teamwork in the workplace

·         Discuss your thoughts on maintaining balance between work and home life – talk about experiences you have had and what you have learned

·         Follow-up goal achievement

Work and Home Life Balance

·         Discuss your thoughts and experiences related to having work and home life balance

·         Ask mentee for their expectations

·         Relay reasonable expectations to mentee based upon their chosen technology field and years of experience

Long-term Career Plans

·         Discuss different career options for particular technology field

·         Identify mentee’s longer term career goals

·         Break long-term goals into shorter-term goals and strategies

·         Review mentees job search activities

·         Review mentees resume and cover letters – ensure they match to specific positions

·         Ask mentee to think about any other topics, questions they would like to review at the next meeting

·         Review and progress or questions related to establishing and growing a career network

·         Share professional contacts where possible and see if can arrange for further mock interviews

·         Answer any mentee questions or follow-ups

·         Begin an action plan for the next 3 months for the mentee for post-mentorship

·         Review any job search activities and progress in networking

Wrap-up Session

·         Discuss your learnings (from your perspective) from partnership

·         Ask mentee to discuss their learnings

Closing Session

·         Thank mentee for participation and work during mentorship

·         Take time to complete evaluation and ask mentee to complete evaluation

·         Determine is you will stay in touch informally or if you wish to continue with a formal relationship
