Overview

As other provincial associations in Canada grant similar designations to Alberta, it is important to note that a designation only has effect within the province in which it was issued. Since designations from various associations currently represent different scopes of practice, individuals who possess designations from another province must apply for a designation transfer.

Notes:

1. The P.Tech. designation offered in British Columbia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Quebec and Saskatchewan are not equivalent to the P.Tech.(Eng.)/(Geo.) designation offered in Alberta. P.Tech. designations offered in these provinces are equivalent to C.E.T. in Alberta.
2. Any engineering/geoscience professional designation (i.e. P.Eng., P.L.Eng., or EIT) from an engineering or geoscience professional regulatory body is not eligible for transfer to the C.Tech., C.E.T. or P.Tech. designations in Alberta.

Application Process

Timeline: Within 20 days of receiving a completed application (including passing of ASET Ethics Exam) from the labour mobility applicant, ASET will notify the applicant of the decision.
 

How to Apply

1. Applicants transferring from another Canadian province must complete the Interprovincial Transfer Form and submit it online through the Interprovincial Transfer Application Portal, and pay the current transfer fee ($100 + GST) and exam fee ($240 + GST).
2. Transfer applicants must successfully complete the ASET Ethics Exam (formerly ASET PPE) as a condition of transfer regardless of whether the registrant has completed a professional practice and ethics exam in another province.* Transfer applicants who have completed the National Professional Practice Exam (NPPE) in Alberta are exempt from this requirement (ASET will confirm with APEGA that the applicant has passed the NPPE).  
3. Once approved, new registrants will receive information on mandatory Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements.

1. A regulated registrant. Only regulated registration categories are transferrable between provinces. Applicants will be awarded the corresponding title in use in Alberta.
2. Registrants in good standing in their province of origin before a transfer of registration will be accepted.

*This policy is designed to ensure transfer applicants understand legislation and regulations in Alberta, including their obligations under the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act. Section 705 3(f) under Chapter 7 of the Canadian Free Trade Agreement (CFTA) permits provincial regulators to ensure certified professionals transferring in from another province or territory have knowledge of the measures maintained by the receiving province applicable to the practice of the occupation in that province. ASET requires certified registrants transferring to Alberta to complete the ASET Ethics Exam to demonstrate this knowledge.

ASET Ethics Examination
The ASET Ethics Exam (formerly ASET Professional Practice Exam) tests applicants on their knowledge of the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act and related regulations of the practice of applied science, information, and engineering technology in accordance with section 13(1)(c) of the ASET Regulations.

Labour Mobility Act
The Labour Mobility Act allows highly skilled Canadian certified professional workers in more than 100 regulated occupations to easily and quickly get work in Alberta by removing barriers and creating a consistent approach to recognizing out-of-province credentials.

Canadian Free Trade Agreement (CFTA)
The CFTA reaffirms the labour mobility provisions and obligations that were established under the 1995 Agreement on Internal Trade (AIT).
